The Science and Technology
Experience
- Three days of hands-on activities for year eleven students arranged by Rotary
and participating Tertiary institutions.
Sponsored by Rotary, made possible by the input of universities
and institutes of technology.
> The
Aims
- To increase the awareness of and enthusiasm for the 'sciences' and their applications.
- To understand that these are crucial contributors to contemporary life.
- To encourage a continuing commitment to further study which could lead to related employment.
> The
Objectives
- To present annually , a number
of three day, hands on experiences in scientific activities
for students of any Year 11 science subject (NCEA Level
1).
- To secure the attendance of
students with any ready interest in the sciences and a
potential for the further studies in them.
- To present science as interesting,
exciting and wide-ranging.
- To lift the profile of science
amongst this upper band of capable students.
- To encourage students to continue
their studies in "the sciences".
- To indicate career opportunities
in science-related occupations.
- To show the significance of
science and its technologies in our lives.
- To promote the Sci-Tech Experience
throughout the country so that students from any area may
have reasonable access to the programme.
> Programme
Financing
The total costs of the programme are met from the following
three sources:
- Student fees
- currently $90.00 per head. This fee is paid by the student
or in cases of hardship an application
can be made to a local Rotary Club for support. If the Club
has the funds available they may agree to pay all or part
of that fee. To find your local Rotary Club go to organisers and
click on the Rotary logo.
(This fee covers transportation, catering, mentors, enrolment,
administration and sundries).The Tertiary Institutions - meet the costs of their
tutor's time and make available premises, etc. They estimate
this cost at $10,000 per Institution.
- The Sponsor(s) - meet the costs of promoting and
administering the programme, communication with students,
schools and the Rotary Clubs, etc.
> Organisational
Structure
All
funds will be administered by The Sci-Tech Experience Trust, a
registered charitable trust.
The organisation and management of the programme is provided by
a committee chaired by Rotary and comprising representation from
each of the contributing tertiary institutions. |
